Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is the surgical option for obesity where conservative treatment is not successful. Bariatric surgery is of two types - malabsorptive and restrictive surgery. Malabsorptive surgery decreases the absorption of food while restrictive surgery decreases the size of the stomach.

Various techiniques of bariatric surgeries include gastric bypass Roux-en, laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic roux-en y gastric bypass, and gastric imbrication.

Gastric Bypass Roux-en - A small stomach pouch is created from the stomach portion. The pouch is attached directly to the small intestine bypassing a larger part of the stomach and duodenum. Therefore food intake and fat absorption is reduced.

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding - A hollow band is placed around the stomach creating a small pouch with narrow passage that delays passage of food into intestine. This minimizes food consumption and individual feels full for longer period.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy - The stomach is cut vertically into small pouch and the other portion of the stomach is removed. The removed portion of stomach contains the hungry stimulating hormones. The lower part of the stomach is not altered. The capacity of food intake is reduced and you will not feel hungry quiet often than before.

Laparoscopic Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass - It is similar to Roux-en Y gastric bypass but performed using laparoscope, a minimally invasive surgery. A small stomach pouch is created which is attached to the small intestine. The remaining stomach is sealed. The pouch limits the quantity of food.

Gastric Imbrication - The curved part of the stomach is folded and stitched with non-dissolvable stitches. The surgery does not remove any part of the stomach or creates a pouch as in other surgeries. Therefore the food consumed is very less and weight loss is around 60-90% at the end of 2 years.
